It Makes Students Better at Maths

A Higher Level Maths mock exam commissioned in 2025 found a marked disparity in the attainment of the highest grades between Applied Mathematics students and non-Applied Mathematics students — concentrated in the Section B “Contexts and Applications” questions, the ones no student can prepare for by memorising a method.

The hardest marks in Higher Level Mathematics are not in the questions students have seen before. They are in the ones they have not. Applied Mathematics gives students two years of deliberate practice at exactly that: reading an unfamiliar situation, deciding which tools apply, and working through to an answer without a worked example to copy.

That habit transfers. It is why students who take Applied Mathematics so often find the unseen parts of the Mathematics paper far less intimidating than their classmates do.

Our approach

Starting Before Senior Cycle

Most students meet Applied Mathematics for the first time in 5th Year, with two years to learn an entirely new way of working. Our 3rd Year and Transition Year group starts earlier, so that by Senior Cycle the ideas are already familiar.

Our 1st and 2nd Year group lays the groundwork earlier still, through Applied Mathematics foundations built into their accelerated Junior Cycle work.
